Parents to Give More Time and Support to their Children

No doubt, children and the young are lured by expensive gifts. Many parents don’t give attention and time to their children. They try to compensate this lapse by bribing them with rich gifts. Perhaps they don’t know that there can be no substitute for love. Love is the first and foremost thing that binds children with their parents. Neglecting and uncaring parents spoil their children. Neglected children go astray like rudderless ships. Constant love and care help to mould their personality. They grow mentally, physically and spiritually.
A secure home atmosphere plays a key role in life. Adolescence is a very critical age in man’s life. An adolescent is like a calf. He yearns for love of his parents. If he is left uncared, he looks towards other means of sensual gratifications. He loses interest in life. He develops into a wild and perverted personality. He takes to smoking and falls in a bad company. Parents beware! If you are not giving proper attention to your children you are gradually losing them. They need your guidance, help and care. Satisfy these basic emotional needs of your children. They will grow into responsible and responsive human beings. Take care of them. They will certainly take care of you when you grow old.

Problem of Slums in Our Cities

In the last century, we saw many new towns and cities coming up in every country. The process of urbanization went on at a very fast pace. Millions of people migrated to towns and cities from villages. This migration of population gave birth to many unplanned settlements. They rose up as slums. In India every big city has almost one third of its population living in slums. Millions of people are living in subhuman conditions in slums. They don’t have even basic civic facilities. They use open spaces near them as public latrines. Nor do they get pure potable water. Narrow lanes and unplanned houses have no provision for fresh air and sunlight. There is no privacy among the inhabitants.
Life in slums becomes unbearable during the rainy season. Rains and floods make them living hells. Tropical diseases like malaria, fever and dehydration take a heavy toll of human lives, particularly, of children. Unfortunately, slums are mushrooming unabated. Municipal corporations have closed their eyes towards their problems. Politicians visit them only once in five years nears the elections. No one cares to make these little hells suitable for human habitation.

Ragging in Educational Institutions

Ragging in schools and colleges in fast getting acceptability and even respectability. It has become a customary practice on the campus. In Engineering and Medical colleges, this evil practice is getting popular day by day. This disease is no more confined to colleges and universities. In so many public schools, ragging sessions are gaining a new respectability.

Many defend the practice of ragging. They think that it is a harmless way of introduction. The freshers learn mixing up with their seniors in a new institution. However, giving sanction to ragging in any form is bad. Senior students bully, humiliate and even beat up their juniors. Imagine the torture and insults the freshers have to undergo during a ragging session.
There are other civilized ways of mutual introduction. The seniors should welcome their juniors. They should volunteer themselves to come to their help in the new environment. They should encourage the juniors to open themselves before them. Ragging should be strictly banned in educational institutions. The guilty should be given exemplary punishments.

Drug Abuse Among Students

Drugs have been used by mankind for medical purposes since ages. But the abuse of drugs has been caused a world-wide concern these days. According to a survey conducted by WHO there are about 7 million heroin addicts. There are 4.8 million cocaine abusers. 3.4 million addicts use other narcotics. The abuse of drugs is now an international problem. Recent studies in India are shocking. About 88% of the heroin addicts in India are in the age group of 14-25 years.
Children of families whose parents maintain strained relations become easy prey to drugs. To start with, the addict-students takes a fill to get a thrill. Very soon, he develops a mental dependence to the thrill. He requires an increasing dose daily. Drugs affect his health, mind and morals. Physically, mentally and spiritually ha becomes a wreck.
The gravity of the situation demands an all-out war against the use of drugs. Students should be enlightened about the devastating effects of drugs. The government and voluntary organisations should work hand-in-hand. They must wipe out this evil from the student-community in particular.

Exploitation of Women

It has been a male dominated world all along the ages. Woman was reduced to be just an appendage to man. Child marriage, 'sati'-tradition and 'purda-system' and many other evil practices crushed the women of India.
However, the scenario is changing very fast. The Constitution of free India safeguards women's rights. Our Constitution put her at par with man socially, politically and economically. Universal Education has given her a new confidence. She has proved that she can equal man in all walks of life. Women have proved to be better doctors, articles, administrators, and engineers than their counterparts. They are pressing for reservation of seats in the parliament and legislatures. It is just the beginning. Much more remains to be done. But one thing is certain. The march of times can't be arrested back. None can stop the onward march of women.

Child - Abuse

Childhood is the garden period of man's life. Children need love and care for their growth and development. However, child abuse is the tragic irony of Indian social life. About 10 million children are employed in unhealthy, hazardous and dangerous trades and industries. Bare footed, lean and thin children have to work for 10 to 15 hours a day. They work in numerous shops, 'dhabbas', brick kilns, small factories and cottage industries. Some risk their lives while selling newspapers on busy roads.
These child-workers are generally ill-fed and treated like bonded labourers. They are often underpaid. Thousands of children work in fire-crackers and match-factories in South India. Many of them get killed in accidents and fires. The carpet industry in most in human conditions.
Poverty is the main reason that compels many poor parents to send their children for work. India has the largest number of children working in most inhospitable, and in human surroundings. The Child Labour Act should be enforced with all sincerity and strictness. Exemplary punishment should be given to the defaulters and the defiant employers.

Dowry System In India

Giving and receiving of dowry is a social evil or a crime. Yet this is widely practiced almost in every state and community. Every eligible boy has a price. He is for sale to the highest bidder. His parents dictate the terms and demand dowry in the form of cash and kind. Such demands put the poor father of the girl in a tight corner. He may beg, borrow or steal but he has to spend for his daughter's marriage. He, however, cannot meet constant demands made repeatedly even after marriage as there is a limit to his finances. The bride is tortured and even burnt alive. Isn't it possible to finish this evil ? Perhaps we can check it to some extent through laws and proper education of our youth. They only can bring an end to this in human practice.

Evils of Dowry

Ours is a male dominated society. Women has been relegated to a secondary place of marginal importance in the family. She has been reduced to a thing. She is not a human being. The recent spate in this cases of bride burning exposes the hollowness of our society Cases of bride-burning are so rampant in lower middle class urban families. The birth of a female child is still considered to be a burden on the parents. Giving a young girl in marriage has never been an easy thing. It is a very long practice to give a hefty dowry to the bridegroom. Beauty, good features, cultures and qualification are not important considerations. A fat dowry over weighs all these considerations. The evil practice of the dowry system continues. The greedy in-laws settle the amount of dowry before fixing the date of marriage. Naked materialism and consumerism have only whetted their appetite. Demand for Marutis, Hero-Honda motor-bikes, music systems, are growing in the marriage market. But still the greed of dowry seekers remains unsatiated, Bride- burning is not a rare phenomenon in India.
The Anti-Dowry Act 1976 must be given more teeth. The dowry seekers should be socially boycotted. They should be given exemplary punishments. The public and voluntary organisations should come forward to root out this evil practice from our society.

How We Can Help The Handicapped

The Handicapped or the physically disabled persons, the dump, the crippled and the mentally retarded have to suffer hard and live miserably. They have to bear bitter problems and difficulties due to their physically disability, and still they are ignored and looked down upon by society. Actually they need a proper and healthy treatment. With this idea, the U.N.O. decided to celebrate 1981 as 'the international year of the handicapped'. They thought that it would be a good method of paying heed to the sad plight of the handicapped and doing something for their welfare. In the world, there are nearly forty crore of people, physically disabled and mentally upset. Truly, they deserve, not hatred and contempt, but love and sympathy.

How We Can Help The Handicapped

There is no equality in the world of human beings. Some are more fortunate, others are less. Most of the children are born normal in every respect. But the number of the handicapped children is also very large in every state and society. Those who are blind, polio-victims or mentally retarded come in the category of the handicapped. Then there also are others who become permanently disabled as a result of an accident on the road or at the farm or in the factories. It becomes our moral duty to help them in a way we can. It is a sin to neglect them or look down upon them. It is our moral duty to help them. What is the best type of help that we can give ? Well, giving them alms will not do. We should give them some training so that they are able to earn their livelihood independently. The Government is doing a lot for them now- a- days.

The Wonders of Science

Modern sciences is a house of wonders and miracles. It is far more powerful than Aladin's lamp. It does unheard of functions. Science has put into the hands of man powers which earlier only gods and angles had. Just imagine, we can swim like fish and fly like birds and run like rabbits. Our voices travel along the wires with the speed of electricity. Man has physically reached the moon. We can live telecast of Olympic Games and Cricket- matches. Television is one of the most delightful wonders of science. Electronics is the best latest miracles of our age. Computers work faster and more efficiently than any proved as Aladin's lamp for the modern man.

Watching Television - Benefits and ILL- effects

Television has both merits and demerits. As for merits, it brings us latest news round the worlds. It also educate us. Through advertisements, it increases our knowledge about our rights as consumers. The important benefits of TV is that it entertains us and increases our IQ's. But it has its ill-effects also. For example, it affects our eyesight. TV is harmful for school children. They shirk homework. They lag behind in education. Secondly, it makes us hard to human emotions through violence in films. Foreign TV networks has harmful effects. The 'culture' shown on this network is different from our social values. Vulgar scenes, naked-ness, vulgar dances etc. lead our young minds astray. Our age-old human values are now disappearing. We are no more sensitive to our values towards our brethren, parents etc. Social values are getting eroded. All these are ill-effects of television. In a way, Television is a necessary evil.

Effect of Watching Television

Television has now become almost  an essential part of every house. Although, everyone seems to enjoy watching it, the youngsters enjoy it more than others. It is quite useful too if they watch some selected programmes. However, what happens is that the young boys and girls are watching the light entertainment programmes from morning till evening. This is a misuse of television and must be avoided. It can cause many harms to body and mind. First of all, it affects the eyes. Secondly, many programmes are such as do not have a desirable influence on the young mind. Last but not least, the studies suffer. They pay no heed to their home work. So television should be preferably watched for not more than two or three hours a day.

The TV Programmes That I Liked Most

Television is our latest source of entertainment. It is really a wonderful gift of science. It turns our drawing-room into a little picture hall. Some people call it an 'idiot box' also. I don't agree with them. I love to watch my favourite show on the little screen. Earlier, I used to watch 'Is Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon' Every day. This serial became popular all over the country. It, was enjoyed even by the illiterate women and peasants. The presentation of the story, was superb. Then i liked to watch 'The Bare Ache Lagte Hai'. It was another grand show. It made a good start. This serial too was equally educative and entertaining. I never missed it.

Hazards of Television-Watching for Kids

Recently, an incident in the newspapers shocked the conscience of all parents. Some children tried to imitate the stunts shown on television and embraced their death. It has given birth to a debate. Should such stunts be shown on television ? What are the hazards of television-watching for kids ? And finally, does the 'idiot box' provide healthy and meaningful programmes for children ?
Children are very sensitive. They are very tender. They are of impressionable nature and age. Whatever they read in books or watch on television gets imprinted in their minds. They have natural flair for heroics. Adventures thrill them. Sensational programmes on television fire their imagination. Programmes like 'Superman' and 'Shaktiman' tempt them to imitate the heroics and stunts they are only playing with their lives.
Parents and teachers have a great responsibility. They should not allow the children of tender age to watch horror films, stunts or such undesirable programmes on television. Only healthy entertainment can keep the minds and morals of our children healthy.

Indian TV-Serving the Nation

Indian TV has come of age.It made a modest beginning in 60s. Gradually it developed into the most powerful and effective medium of mass entertainment and education. Really, television is one of the most wonderful gifts of science to man. To visualize the remote is another feather in the cap of man.
The greatest service of TV has been in the field of education and mass enlightenment. Teaching of science and technology has made it the most effective tool for mass education.Promotion of health and hygiene among the common masses is another great contribution. Liberalization and globalization has widened the range and volume of TV in India. The monopoly of the Doordarshan was broken by the Star TV, ZEE TV and many other channels. TV channels earn millions in advertisements and sponsorship's of sports and games. ESPN, DD Sports and Ten Sports mint money by sponsoring international games and sports. The most wonderful contribution of Indian TV has been in the field of entertainment.latest Serials in 2011-2012  like Is Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon , Balika Vadho , Pratigya etc... Have become a part of daily life for millions in India. then we have songs, films and quiz competitions. With all its shortcomings, Indian TV has done a marvelous job in educating and entertaining masses in India.
